FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Am I too late to join for the show in March?

A.  Rehearsals start in August for the following March.  If you already know the show, you may still be able to join around November time!  Please contact us to find out.

Q. When do you rehearse?

A. We get together every Tuesday evening 7.30pm to 9.30pm from late August through to the show in early March (missing a couple of weeks over Christmas).  In the New Year, there are also Sunday afternoon rehearsals 2-5pm up to the show.  The rehearsals are currently at St. John's Church Hall, Kirkcaldy.

Q. I don't know anyone - are you friendly?

A. Yes, we are very friendly and welcome new faces.  If you are really shy why not bring a friend along with you for a bit of moral support.

Q. What will I need to bring with me?

A. Yourself, a cardi in case it's chilly and a score (music).  You can either buy a score or borrow one from the society when you arrive.

Q. I'm looking for a new club or hobby but I'm not sure about theatre

It's great fun, light hearted and a great adrenaline rush when you're on stage - even in the chorus!

Q. It still sounds too scary - would I have to sing on my own?

A. No, absolutely not, you'll be singing with the rest of the chorus.  You will be moving around on the stage and reacting to what's happening but you won't need to sing solo or say anything. .

Q. Do I need to be able to read music?

A. No you don't need to be able to read music, although if you can that's great.  You will be able to pick up the tunes and harmonies as we go along.  A lot of us learn the pieces by listening to a CD of the show (try Kirkcaldy Library) or by singing along to the tunes on the Gilbert and Sullivan Archive Website.

Q. Gilbert and Sullivan shows are operattas - aren't they really serious and heavy going?

No not at all!  The Gilbert and Sullivan operettas are also known as "The Comic Operas".  Yes, there is plenty of singing involved, but it is very light hearted, with plenty of repetition and jokes involved.  Poor Frederic was supposed to have been apprenticed to a pilot by his nursery maid.  She being hard of hearing, however, had apprenticed him to be a pirate!

Q. Can my friends come and watch me?

A. Yes of course they can.  It makes a really good night out for a group of friends, family or workmates to come along and watch you in the show, and the hilarity can be continued in the bar afterwards.

Q. What happens in the week of the show?

You will need to be at the Adam Smith Theatre by around about 6pm every evening of the show, also for the dress rehearsal and/or technical rehearsal, and of course not forgetting the Saturday Matinee. So you will be there 6pm til late Mon through to Friday, and pretty much all day Saturday.  We usually have a meal after the show on one of the nights, and a buffet and ceilidh after the Saturday nights performance.

Q. I don't know how to do my own stage make-up.  Will there be anyone to help?

Yes, we have our own make-up ladies complete with make-up.  You don't need to know anything about how to put on make-up.  Guys, don't worry, you will look fine, honest!

Q. Do I have to provide my own costume?

No, the costumes are all hired in, and you won't need to do anything about your main costume.  However, you may need to bring a pair of tights, an under t-shirt or source a pair of shoes.

Q. How old do I need to be to join?

You can join the Society from aged 16 onwards. In some productions we invite younger people to play specific roles. We have members of all ages and a range of experience from newcomers to some who have been with the Society for over 50 years. What better recommendation on how much fun it is to be a member of Kirkcaldy G&S!!!

Q. How much will all this cost me?

The membership fee is £50, which works out at about £1.90 per week from August to March.  There are also various reductions, such as 20% off your first years membership fees, students??? etc. There is currently no cost to join for the summer concert.

So what are you waiting for?  We'll see you at St. John's Church Hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Go on, you'll never know what you're missing out on if you don't give it a go.
