Ruddigore Characterisations
and Audition Pieces
Characterisations
Rose (soprano)
- Fairly simple soul with not much worldly knowledge other
than that gleamed from her book of etiquette. She is a bit
flighty & easily led. She’s “nice”
Mad Margaret (mezzosoprano) -
Uncontrollably mad as a hatter, as suggested by the name, in act
one. Controllably mad in act two.
Dame
Hannah (contralto) - Everybody's favourite granny with a sad past – very
much regrets she couldn’t marry her love. Can take care of
herself though and shows it. Very soppy with Sir Roderic.
Zora (soprano) /
Ruth (spoken) - Bubbly
bridesmaids a bit OTT
Robin (baritone) - Likeable,
shy, romantic - most of the time. Can manipulate people and is
very clever. Not sinister at all not even in act 2 when I he is
the “baddie”
Sir Despard (bass
baritone or baritone) - A
baddun hated by all in act 1 – very much the character the
audience likes to hiss at! Act 2 the paragon of virtue
Old Adam (bass) - Faithful
manservant – would like a heavy Cornish accent here. Loves his
master and goes with him no matter what. Light and comedic.
Sir Roderic
(bass-baritone) -
Deathly & scary on first entry. Mellows a bit in the dialogue
with Robin though still enjoys the torture. A puppy with Dame
Hannah
Richard (tenor) - A swashbuckling type who is not the most
intelligent sailor the British Navy has seen. He is genuine in
his beliefs and his life is dominated by the fact that he always
acts in accordance with the dictates of his heart even when he
knows his decision may cause upset.
